COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Several hotel parking lots near the terminals at John Glenn Columbus International Airport had shattered glass on the ground and broken windows after multiple cars were broken into overnight.
Jason Buzzeo was in Columbus for work. When he came outside his hotel Tuesday morning, his pickup truck driver's side window was broken. His car was just one of many at three different surrounding hotels.
“It’s very frustrating,” Buzzeo said. “You know, it’s a brand-new vehicle, and you come out to that, and it’s extremely frustrating. You work hard, you buy things from working hard and then somebody takes it upon themselves to do damage to it. It's not a very good feeling.”
Buzzeo also shared how those responsible were able to get in his truck, noting that the entire experience has just been uncomfortable.
“They went in through the window," he said. "I had my mirrors folded in it at the time. They forcefully, you know, opened the mirrors, looks like they crawled in, went through the center console.”
In a statement to NBC4 an airport spokesperson said in part: "Early this morning, airport police responded to reports of vehicle break-ins in the hotel and walking lot parking areas at John Glenn Columbus International Airport. These incidents appear to follow a troubling pattern seen across central Ohio, where a highly mobile group targets vehicles, smashing windows, and stealing valuables within minutes.”
“It's not the norm," Buzzeo said. "I guess you could say it makes you kind of rethink where you want to stay, where you want to go. I guess just count your blessings every day of, you know, being safe.”
The airport spokesperson also said they have increased patrols and security presence throughout the parking areas and are actively working with regional law enforcement partners to identify and apprehend those responsible.
