ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Reverend Doctor Rickey Harvey, one of the spiritual leaders of Rochester’s community, is grieving after his youngest son died late Sunday night in a single-car crash in Virginia. Rishard Bernard Brummell Harvey, 21, died at the scene.
“Heaven gained him but we lost him, and it hurts,” Rev. Dr. Harvey said.
Rishard was the youngest of four and full of promise. The Brighton High School graduate was a rising senior at Hampton University.
“Straight A’s. Straight A’s sometimes B’s but even he was disappointed when his GPA dropped below a 3.6, 3.7,” Rev. Dr. Harvey said.
On Sunday evening, Rishard was driving back to Hampton after a visit with his big brother, Rickey Junior, a pastor in Baltimore. Police believe Rishard fell asleep at the wheel and veered off the road, crashing into an excavator in a work zone.
“According to the reports that we received, this happened just before midnight and he was 30 minutes away from his home,” Rev. Dr. Harvey said.
As a pastor, Rev. Dr. Harvey is often the one comforting others in times of grief and loss.
Deanna Dewberry, News10NBC: “You’re in a unique position because when people are hurting and grieving, they come to you. What do you do with that?”
Rev. Dr. Rickey Harvey: “I try to lean on some of the words that God has given me to give to other people – like trust in the Lord, that God does not fail us…. But it’s hard. It causes me to understand more how other people feel. I get to see I get to feel what other people feel,” Rev. Dr. Harvey said. “What I feel now causes me to be more empathetic, sympathetic, compassionate.”
Rev. Dr. Harvey says precious memories of Rishard, a fun-loving kid who became a young man with purpose, bring him comfort now. He is inviting his church family and community members to share memories of Rishard. He’ll receive members and friends at Mount Olivet Baptist Church on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The family hasn’t yet finalized funeral plans.
Rishard’s mother, Yvonne, is having a tough time and Rev. Dr. Harvey asks for the community’s prayers for her and the rest of Rishard’s family.
