Peter Mohler officially began his term as the 30th president of the University Wednesday, pledging in an email to UA students to spend the next several months focusing on engaging the community and listening.
Mohler was appointed by the UA System Board of Trustees on June 16, after former President Stuart Bell announced he would step down in January.
“I want to hear your ideas, your experiences and your hopes for how we can expand UA’s reach and impact,” Mohler said in an email to students. “Working together, we will build on our proud tradition and find new ways to empower and elevate our students and the communities we serve.”
Previously, Mohler served as the executive vice president for research, innovation and knowledge at Ohio State University and also served as the acting president in 2023.
He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Wake Forest in 1995 and a doctoral degree in molecular physiology from University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2000.
The hiring process for Mohler included a presidential search committee holding listening sessions for University stakeholders to seek community input.
Mohler will begin his term by celebrating summer commencement at Coleman Coliseum on August 2.
“I am excited to get started,” Mohler said. “I look forward to getting to know you and working in partnership as we write the next chapter of Alabama’s story together.”
