SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Alex the Great, a Flemish giant rabbit that delighted home crowds at San Francisco Giants home games on more than one occasion, has died. The sad news was confirmed on the rabbit's Instagram account and in a post on his X account.
"Unfortunately, Alex crossed the rainbow this morning at 7:50 a.m. PST," a post on X read, "This is the hardest news. The pain is unbearable. We will have more information later just know he had complications from the cancer treatments that took his life. Let his legend continue he was very loved."
The rabbit and his owners had been contending with a cancer diagnosis. According to his Instagram, Alex underwent surgery last week at UC David Veterinary to remove a second cancer tumor. Prior to traveling to David for the surgery, Alex's owners had taken him to Mission Rock last week to meet up with fans and supporters for "snuggles."

Alex was a regular at SF Giants games over the years, and according to his Instagram, was at the ballpark for a home game as recently as April. A trained therapy rabbit, Alex regularly comforted hospice patients and travelers at local airports.
He also had a photo op with popstar Chappell Roan last year at Outside Lands.
In addition to being a therapy rabbit and the SF Giants "rally rabbit," Alex served as an ambassador for a number of brands.
Flemish giant rabbits are known for their large size and docile temperament. Alex weighed 28 to 32 pounds and was 3.5 feet long, making him one of the largest domesticated rabbits in the world, according to his official website.
