ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monday marks three years since the ambush on Bauman Street that killed Rochester Police Officer Tony Mazurkiewicz and wounded his partner, Officer Sino Seng.
Since that night, Kelvin Vickers has been found guilty of carrying out the ambush and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition, the community has come together to pay tribute to Officer Mazurkiewicz’s service. That includes retired RPD Sgt. Brett Sobieraski, who ran 50 straight marathons across eight states to honor the fallen officer and support his family. In addition, a hockey scholarship aims to keep Mazurkiewicz’s memory and passion for hockey alive.
Local law enforcement agencies are sharing tributes to Mazurkiewicz. RPD called him a dedicated officer and beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

They were investigating the murders of Collinge Jr. and MyJel Rand that happened a day earlier on North Clinton Avenue. Mazurkiewicz died from his gunshot wounds at the hospital, while Seng survived and testified in the trial of Vickers.
Vickers was convicted of carrying out the ambush and killing both Collinge Jr. and Rand. Prosecutors said Vickers was a gang member brought in from Boston to kill rival marijuana dealers during a turf war.
