The transitional president of Syria, Ahmad al-Sharaa, received the final report of the National Committee for Investigation and Fact-Finding ,Sunday, July 20, regarding the events that took place last March along the Syrian coast.

According to a statement published by the Syrian Presidency on Facebook, it affirmed that “the findings included in the report will be thoroughly and carefully examined to ensure that steps are taken to uphold the principles of truth, justice, and accountability, and to prevent the recurrence of violations.”

The Presidency also requested that the committee hold a press conference to present its main findings and work—if deemed appropriate—in a manner that preserves the dignity of victims, respects the integrity of judicial procedures, and protects evidence, in order to uphold the people’s right to know the truth.

The statement emphasized that the committee was established to ensure that Syria moves forward on a path in which violations or attempts to obscure the truth do not become part of its future. It also expressed appreciation for the sincere efforts made by the committee members.

What is the National Committee for Investigation and Fact-Finding?

Transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa formed the committee on March 9, to investigate the coastal events, their causes, and the resulting casualties among Syrian General Security personnel, as well as violations committed against civilians.

The committee was composed of five judges, a lawyer, and an army officer. It was initially required to submit its report to the Presidency within 30 days from the date of its formation.

However, President al-Sharaa extended this deadline by an additional three months, and the revised deadline was scheduled to end on July 9.

The committee includes judges Hanadi Abu Arab, Jumaa al-Dubais al-Anzi, Khaled Adwan al-Halou, Ali al-Nassan, and Alaa al-Din Youssef Latif, along with Colonel Awad Ahmed al-Ali and lawyer Yasser al-Farhan.

The committee was formed in the aftermath of bloody events that swept through coastal cities in western Syria, particularly in Tartus and Latakia, which erupted on March 6 following movements by remnants of the former regime.

According to documentation by the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), the events resulted in the deaths of 803 people, including members of the Syrian General Security and civilians who were killed by elements affiliated with factions loyal to the Syrian state, due to sectarian motives.

In a press conference previously attended by Enab Baladi on March 25, the committee’s spokesperson, Yasser al-Farhan, stated that the committee inspected nine sites and heard testimonies from security, military, and civilian actors in Latakia.

He added that the committee recorded 95 witness statements, received over 30 reports, and met with civil society representatives, community leaders, and international entities.
