France vs Germany Prediction: Women’s Euro 2025 Quarter-Final Preview ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

France are set for a quarter-final showdown against the most-decorated team in Women’s Euros history, with the winner securing a place in the last four. We preview the clash with our France vs Germany Prediction.

France vs Germany Stats: The Key Insights

According to the Opta supercomputer, France have a marginal advantage over Germany in their quest for a semi-final spot, advancing in 52.7% of its 10,000 simulations. Germany, however, remain close behind with a 47.3% chance of progression. Across their major tournament (Euros/World Cup) history, France have only ever qualified for two semi-finals (2011 World Cup and Euro 2022). Germany’s recent heavy 4-1 loss to Sweden was their biggest defeat at a major tournament (Euros/World Cup) since a 4-0 loss to the Swedes in the 1991 World Cup.

After omissions of former captain Wendie Renard, all-time leading goalscorer Eugénie Le Sommer, and midfielder Kenza Dali, questions inevitably arose surrounding Laurent Bonadei’s squad selections as France sought their goal of reaching a first-ever major tournament final.

However, after scoring 11 goals in their three matches to date, their best-ever group-stage haul, those doubts have been emphatically silenced. Do they have what it takes to get past eight-time winners Germany in Saturday’s quarter-final?

French on Form

France have won their last 11 games and are on track to equal their third-best winning streak on record (12). It seems Bonadei’s strategy to bring a fresh perspective to his team is working. France’s head coach has lost just two of his 15 games in charge, with Les Bleus’ last defeat coming back in December 2024 against reigning world champions, Spain (4-2).

However, with France winless in their five encounters at major tournaments against Germany, scoring just five goals while conceding 15, Bonadei’s side now face their biggest test yet.

The most recent competitive meeting between the pair came in the Euro 2022 semi-final, where Germany ran out 2-1 winners. Les Bleus will undoubtedly be looking for their revenge in this grudge match.

Winning all three group games at the Women’s Euros for only the second time in their history (after previously doing so in 2013), France are now trying to win more than three games at a single edition of the competition for the first time ever.

Their front-footed approach could be key in this game. Only four teams have averaged more high turnovers per game than France’s 11.3, while Germany have shown themselves vulnerable to being picked off close to their own goal.

Only Iceland (3) have conceded more goals from high turnovers than Germany (2), so pressing high could be key if France are to record their first ever competitive win over their opponents.

Cascarino in Full Flight

Such French attacking prowess is largely driven by the speed, technical quality and end product of Delphine Cascarino, who has rightfully established herself as a focal point in the attack, as well as being one of the standout players of the tournament.

Her four goal involvements (2 goals, 2 assists) is only bettered by former Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas (7) and Sweden’s Kosovare Asllani (5).

Against the Netherlands, Cascarino became just the second French player on record (since 2013) to be directly involved in three goals in a single Women’s Euros match (two goals, one assist) after Grace Geyoro against Italy in 2022.

She’s been a considerable threat running with the ball. Despite playing just 133 minutes, Cascarino has recorded three shot-ending carries, two of which have resulted in a goal, more than other French player, while ranking sixth among all players at Euro 2025.

Striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto is the only other French player to score two goals at Euro 2025, and with a frontline of Chelsea’s Sandy Baltimore, Katoto and Cascarino, France’s speed may prove a handful for a German defence who seem susceptible to being attacked at pace.

Only against USA (19) have France lost more games in all competitions than against Germany (13), though they did win the most recent encounter 2-1 in the UEFA Women’s Nations League semi-finals in February 2024. Indeed, France could win successive games against Germany for the first time.

Savaged by Sweden

So where did it go wrong for Germany in their final group game?

Germany conceded 3.1 expected goals against Sweden, their second-largest total for that metric on record since 2015 (3.2 vs the Netherlands in February 2021).

They’ll need to resolve those issues quickly in order to keep out a ruthless French attack. While a lot of the shots they conceded came after going down to 10 players when Carlotta Wamser was dismissed in the 31st minute, they were still alarmingly open at the back, particularly down the flanks.

Reliance on Brand

Germany have their own weapons to hurt the French, though, and they’ll need them to be deadly when the chances come. Jule Brand has scored (2) or assisted (2) 80% of Germany’s goals in the group stage of this year’s competition (4/5).

She is one of only two German players on record to record both 2+ goals and 2+ assists in a single edition of a major tournament (World Cup/Euros), the other being Anja Mittag at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup (5 goals, 3 assists).

She really is a player at the heart of everything this team does; no player has been involved in more goals for Germany under Christian Wück than Brand (9 – 2 goals, 7 assists).

She opened the scoring for Germany against Sweden as they got off to a fast start. That’s been something of a rarity for Germany in recent Euros matches; Brand’s goal against Sweden (06:43) was their first in the first half of a Euros match since Alexandra Popp netted against France in July 2022.

Each of Germany’s last six goals in the competition prior to the Sweden defeat were scored in the second half of matches.

Klara’s Carrying

Klara Bühl is one of the most exciting wingers across Europe’s top five leagues.

After topping the Frauen-Bundesliga charts with 14 assists, she’s carried that form into Euro 2025, leading all forwards with 26 open-play attacking sequence involvements for Germany this summer.

Bühl also has a total of 83 carries across this year’s tournament; that’s nearly double any other winger in the competition (second place is teammate Brand) and she is the only player to have carried the ball over 1,000m across all teams.

She’s beaten an opponent with 19 of those carries, and 12 ended in either a shot (9) or chance created (3), the most of any player in the tournament.

France vs Germany Prediction

France won 39.4% of simulations inside 90 minutes, while Germany did so in 33.8% of them. The game went to extra-time – and potentially penalties – in the remaining 26.8% of scenarios.
