Goodman, 73, explained that he originally played football in high school, though he discovered his love of acting when he joined his school’s theater program after an injury. “I found a passion,” he told People in an interview published on Friday, July 18. “I started paying attention for the first time in my [academic] career.”
“The early days of acting were frightening. I went straight from school to New York City 50 years ago this summer," he recalled. "I had to go because if I didn't, I would kick myself in the rear end for the rest of my life. So it was just a matter of saying that I tried.”
He made his Broadway debut in 1985 production of the Huckleberry Finn musical Big River and appeared in movies including Revenge of the Nerds and Raising Arizona. However, Goodman finally had his big break when he was cast on the 1988 sitcom Roseanne as the titular character's husband, Dan Conner.
“I went in to read with Roseanne [Barr] the first time, and I never do this, but I walked out of there knowing I had the job. It was just too good of a fit,” he said of their chemistry.
While the original show ended in 1997, Goodman went on to reprise the role in the show's 2018 reboot. Barr, 72, left the project after she came under fire for a racist social media post, and the show was renamed as The Conners.
