Chicago weather: Weekend severe storm chances loom, with heat and humidity building ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The Chicago area forecast Friday calls for a mostly sunny and dry day, with highs in the low 80s to upper 70s. But by tonight, increasing humidity and a vortex of storms developing over the northern plains will bring much muggier conditions and the chance for severe weather Saturday.

Heat and humidity will increase again next week, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, said along with daily chances for rain.

As the weekend approaches, here’s a breakdown of what the forecast looks like.

Saturday and Sunday

Most forecast models were in agreement that strong-to-severe storms with heavy rain and gusty winds were expected to develop overnight over the northern plains, Jeanes said.

“If that develops, we get the chance of thunderstorms as early as 9 a.m.,” Jeanes said, with storms starting to the north and west. The storms could remain in the area through around mid-afternoon Jeanes said.

If morning storms hold out, Jeanes said, the severe threat would be greater in the afternoon.

A post from the National Weather Service showed the most likely scenario was “a line of decaying storms” across northern Illinois in the morning, with some storms containing damaging winds and hail toward the central part of the state in the afternoon.

Still, the development would depend on what forms overnight.

“Saturday’s severe storm risk will depend on the evolution of any thunderstorm complexes across Iowa and Minnesota tonight,” the NWS said.

Temperatures Saturday would be in the low 80s, Jeanes said, with highs in the upper 70s Sunday. Sunday could also see a chance of rain developing south of I-80.

Heat ramps up next week

“Next week, its going to be all about the heat,” Jeanes said, thanks to a dome of high pressure across the area.

The heat and humidity will begin to build Tuesday, with the heat lifting to the north as the week goes on. Temperatures will be in the upper 80s to low 90s, Jeanes said, with even higher “feels-like” temperatures.

Rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms were also possible next week, Jeanes said, starting Tuesday and lasting through Friday.
