A man accused of critically injuring a woman when he fired nearly 60 rounds into a Greeley bar in December is set to stand trial in February after pleading not guilty to all charges Thursday morning in Weld District Court.
Jimmy Cazares, 32, faces two counts of attempted murder after deliberation, two counts of attempted murder due to extreme indifference and three other felony charges, according to Colorado court records.
Cazares appeared in front of Judge Marcelo Kopcow on Thursday for an arraignment, in which Cazares tolled his right to speedy trial, making the Feb. 2 start date possible.
Cazares’ case dates back to just before 2 a.m. Nov. 30, when he was kicked out of Wyler’s Bar & Grill, 2385 27th St., Unit 513, for fighting with another man. Cazares’ came back roughly 40 minutes later and fired 59 rounds into the front of the bar with an unserialized — commonly referred to as a ghost gun — AR-15, according to an affidavit for his arrest.
When police arrested Cazares later in the night, they said he had more than 11 grams of cocaine in his pocket, as well as a live round matching the spent casings collected on scene. He told officers that he was involved in an altercation with another man earlier in the night and admitted to shooting at the bar because he was upset that he was kicked out, according to the affidavit.
Cazares’ five-day trial is set to begin Feb. 2 in Weld District Court. His next appearance will be a Dec. 18 motions hearing.
