AG Bondi visits Alcatraz as Trump continues to float plan to reopen it as a prison ...Middle East

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- United States Attorney General Pam Bondi toured Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay Thursday as the Trump Administration continues to float the outlandish plan of reopening the island as a federal prison. The AG along with Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum were seen traveling on a Coast Guard vessel from Sausalito to Alcatraz and back Thursday morning.

According to the Department of Justice, Bondi and Burgum met with park police and directed staff to work on plans to convert Alcatraz from a national park and tourist attraction back into a federal prison. President Donald Trump first floated the unlikely plan earlier this year, despite the fact that Alcatraz hasn't been an active prison for over 60 years.

At the time of its closure in the early 1960s, Alcatraz was in such a state of decay, it would have cost $3 to $5 million just to bring it up to 1963 standards -- the equivalent of at least $32 million today. Flipping Alcatraz back into a prison would require a two-thirds majority in Congress -- in order to repeal the island’s environmental protections -- before transferring it to the Bureau of Prisons.

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-California) called the idea stupid. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has said the proposal is "not a serious" plan.

One former Alcatraz park ranger also blasted the plan.

“I think it's ridiculous. Because it's falling apart. I worked out there 40 years ago as a ranger and it was falling apart then," said former ranger Liz Bletz. "It would cost so much money to make that inhabitable for even the way they like to treat prisoners these days.”

“The amount of taxpayer resources needed here would be obscene," said State Sen. Scott Weiner (D-San Francisco). "It would be literally rebuilt. Reopening Alcatraz as a prison would be setting money on fire, setting taxpayer money on fire.”

The renewed noise around reopening Alcatraz as a prison comes as President Trump has been actively seeking to turn the page from ongoing fallout related to the administration's handling of the Epstein files.

Pelosi called Bondi and Burgum's visit Thursday a "diversion."

“With stiff competition, the planned announcement to reopen Alcatraz as a federal penitentiary is the Trump Administration’s stupidest initiative yet," said Pelosi in a statement.

Following Thursday morning's visit to Alcatraz, Bondi and Burgum are also expected to visit the Presidio and Muir Woods.
