The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to avoid the Jordan Lake area due to hazardous conditions in the aftermath of Tropical Depression Chantal. The warning comes after multiple deaths in and around the lake.
The sheriff’s office reports the water levels at the lake are higher than normal, creating strong currents, unpredictable depths and dangerous debris, all of which creates risks for both swimmers and boaters.
“These are painful reminders that conditions on the water can turn deadly in an instant,” said Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson. “We’re asking everyone to make safety the top priority and, for now, to stay off the lake.”
Since the storm’s arrival in the Triangle earlier in July, three deaths have been reported on the lake. Two Durham boaters were reported missing the evening of the storm and later found dead, and the body of a 19-year-old was found at the lake the night of July 13. A 21-year-old man from Fayetteville also died at the B. Everett Jordan Dam in June. The four fatalities at the lake this year have surpassed the total from 2024 (three).
The sheriff’s office will continue to monitor conditions. In the meantime, the office is reminding the public to:
Avoid entering the water or boating until conditions improve Always wear a properly fitted life jacket when on or near the water Only swim in designated swimming areas, where life jacket loaner stations are available Be mindful of floating debris, submerged hazards and swift currents, all of which can be deadly“Our priority is protecting lives,” Roberson said. “We’re asking for the community’s help by respecting warnings and avoiding unnecessary risk.”
