By Chris Hicks, County Director – UT Extension Smith County “Thirty Crops” Five years ago, I wrote an article titled “Thirty-Five Crops.” It was based on United Nations projections that 2.5 billion more people were expected to join the global population by 2050. The take home message was that since most crops are planted, grown, and harvested within one year, that meant we only have 35 crops to feed a lot more people than we are feeding now.
