Have you ever wondered if you had extra money owed to you? One local animal shelter was surprised to hear they had a $200,000 donation waiting for them.
Orphans of the Storm in Riverwoods has been in the community for nearly 100 years. It’s beloved by many, so much so that a Lake County woman left behind hundreds of thousands of dollars for them via a life insurance policy when she died.
The problem was the shelter wasn’t aware, and the money went unclaimed.
“There are people who think of organizations like Orphans of the Storm and want to leave something to them as a legacy,” said Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs. “And those people are frequently humble, they don’t come around and brag about it, they don’t tell people ‘when I’m gone I’m giving you hundreds of thousands of dollars.’ They do it quietly. And the problem is sometimes it’s so quietly that the money’s never collected.”
That’s why the treasurer’s office created the I-CASH program, to locate missing money and reunite it with rightful owners.
The program is coming off a record Fiscal Year 2025 that saw them return a staggering $303.8 million in missing funds to residents, businesses and nonprofits.
Orphans of the Storm was included in that, and was presented a check this week as part of the celebration of the milestone.
“We were thrilled,” said Board of Directors Michelle Shields. “Her legacy lives on through every animal we rescue, care for and place into loving homes. This act of kindness is a powerful reminder of how one person’s compassion can ripple though a community.”
She said the donation will go towards renovations and care for the nearly century old facility.
