For the second time in the past week, a PG&E gas line was struck Monday afternoon during city of Ukiah construction on Main Street.
Just after 2 p.m. Monday, the Ukiah Police Department sent out a Nixle alert advising residents to “avoid the area Main St./Smith St.” due to a gas leak.
A few minutes later, a second Nixle alert was sent out, stating evacuation had been ordered due to the gas leak for Main Street between Perkins and Smith streets.
At 3 p.m. Monday, the city of Ukiah advised in a Facebook posting that “due to a gas leak on North Main Street, evacuations have been ordered from Perkins to Norton (along Main). As a precautionary measure, electricity will also need to be shut off in that area. If residents/employees from that area need a cool place to stay until the evacuation order is lifted, you may go to the Ukiah Valley Conference Center (200 S. School St.). Water, electrical outlets, free wifi provided.”
At 5:35 p.m., the city reported that “PG&E crews are onsite. We still do not have an estimated time on lifting the evacuation order, but we are working as quickly as possible.”
At 6:50 p.m., the city reported that “PG&E crews are making good progress. Two lines are clamped already and the other necessary equipment has arrived onsite. We are still looking good for lifting evacuation orders by 10 p.m.”
As it turned out, residents and businesses in the affected area did not have to wait quite that long.
Just before 8 p.m. Monday, the city reported that “evacuation orders have been lifted and power is being restored to the Main Street area. Thank you for your patience, everyone.”
During construction on Main Street Friday afternoon, a gas main was broken in front of the Ukiah Library. The UPD and Ukiah Valley Fire Authority responded and blocked off Perkins Street. Traffic from State Street to Mason Street was detoured for several hours.
“These gas lines that were hit, both today and last Friday, were unmarked/unknown to PG&E. We are coordinating with PG&E to avoid additional mishaps as this project continues,” the city stated on Monday.
Construction on Main Street is expected to last through July. After crews pave Main Street, they will move on to Perkins Street.
