‘Go get that’ – Jordan Spieth barked at caddie after stunning forgotten moment in 2017 Open win ...Middle East

Eight years on from his triumph, Jordan Spieth will hope to replicate this forgotten moment at The Open this week.

Spieth collected his third and most recent major in 2017, finishing three shots clear of Matt Kuchar after a dramatic battle.

The American led the opening three rounds of the event at Royal Birkdale in Southport before an eventful fourth.

In front of a record-breaking crowd, he blew a three-shot lead on the front nine and had a nightmare on the 13th hole.

Spieth sent his tee shot well right, putting his hands on his head in disbelief as he watched his ball sail well off-course.

In fact, it was so far wide that, after a long discussion with officials, he had to take a drop behind a stand of fans and a TV van had to be moved to create space.

Somehow though, the then 23-year-old managed to scramble for just a bogey and that may well have ignited his title push.

That is the moment many will remember from Spieth’s 2017 success, which saw him become just the second player after Jack Nicklaus to win three of golf’s four majors before the age of 24.

However, it was actually a moment that happened after that that also stands out from his major-winning back nine at Birkdale.

And it came on the 15th, just two holes after his ballooned shot.

A perfect effort from the tee led to a neat lay-up to the edge of the green, leaving 40 feet for an eagle putt.

Spieth then stood over his shot, putting with pace and miraculously finding the hole, moving himself to 10-under.

Commentators simply stated: “You. Are. Joking.”

But Spieth kept a completely straight face rather than celebrating, backing away from the hole and walking away.

As he did that, he simply pointed to his caddie, Michael Greller, and told him to go and pick up his ball for him.

He strutted off, barking at Greller: “Go get that!”

Spieth would then turn his back and make his way off the green and towards his bag before reconvening with his caddie.

The stone-cold, emotionless face showed just how locked in and focused he was on his way to glory eight years ago.

He would go on to birdie the 16th from 20 feet and birdie the 17th too, finishing his fourth round 12-under which was enough to win.

Spieth became the youngest Open winner since 22-year-old Seve Ballesteros won the first of his three titles in 1979.

Speaking after his win, he said: “This is absolutely a dream come true.

“I drank some wine from the Claret Jug when Zach Johnson won it two years ago and people said that was bad luck. I started to believe them too after nine holes today.”

He added: “It’s incredible. It’s a life goal of mine. It’s a career goal.

“Growing up playing golf, I just wanted to be able to play in major championships and compete with the best in the world, and things have happened very quickly.

Spieth is now eyeing his first major win since his Open triumph in 2017Getty

“This is as much of a high as I’ve ever experienced in my golfing life. And I’m going to enjoy it more than I’ve enjoyed anything that I’ve accomplished in the past.”

Spieth unfortunately hasn’t managed to claim another major title since that day in 2017, but he’s eyeing another this week.

He is part of the star-studded field heading to Royal Portrush in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Along with Masters champion Rory McIlroy and World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, he’ll be teeing off at Dunluce Links.

Spieth has no wins on the PGA Tour in 2025 and hasn’t won a single event since 2022, but back at The Open, the poor streak could end.

And he’ll hope to be telling his caddie to ‘Go get that’ Claret Jug come Sunday afternoon…
