This week, PAWS Chicago, a no-kill pet adoption center, will take in pets from Texas shelters in areas impacted by flooding earlier this month.
The pets coming to Chicago were in shelters before the flooding, and bringing them to Chicago will give overwhelmed local shelters in Texas more capacity to help pets displaced by the storms, according to a PAWS Facebook post.
PAWS will transport dozens of dogs and cats from the flooded region to Chicago’s Nan & Wayne Kocourek Medical Center for medical treatment before putting them up for adoption at PAWS’ Lincoln Park Adoption Center, PAWS explained on a donation site for the organization’s disaster relief fund, which is used to finance medical care for pets affected by the flash floods.
The shelter first launched its disaster relief program in 2005 during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Since then, the program has responded to various natural disasters around the country, according to the shelter’s website.
“Since Katrina, PAWS Chicago has mobilized its volunteer force in the wake of natural disasters to help animals in the impact zone and provide hope to people coping with unimaginable tragedy,” the site reads.
In 2023, the shelter rescued 33 dogs from Houston shelters after dangerous storms and a tornado. More recently, the shelter took in pets from areas affected by Hurricane Helene last year.
Sunday, the shelter found homes for 49 pets, over half at the Angels with Tails adoption event in Roscoe Village.
“In addition to the 28 who got adopted at the event, another 21 pets went home from our Adoption Center today, which means we’re starting the week with extremely full hearts and a lot of excitement for all the new arrivals we’re going to help in the coming days,” the shelter announced in a Facebook post.
In order to ensure helping the rescues from Texas does not slow their work for Chicago’s pets, the shelter is also seeking foster homes for pets currently in their shelters. Those interested can apply to foster online.
