The three-storey building is made from cross-laminated timber and will host scientists specialising in the relatively new field of NeuroAI, containing 15 principal investigator offices, 96 postdoctoral researcher workstations, seven research administration offices, three administrative offices and ten meeting rooms.
When completed in 2027, the first phase of the CSHL’s 379,500-sq-ft extension will also contain neuroscience and cancer biology labs, plus a parking garage.
A $500m second phase of the project includes an 81,000-sq-ft research housing and conference center, a 56,000-sq-ft housing and collaborative research center for visiting scientists. It will be partially funded by $55m from New York State Empire State Development.
Bruce Stillman, CSHL’s president, said: “We cannot predict the future, but we can prepare for it, and that is what Foundations for the Future does.
“The ongoing expansion will help ensure that CSHL remains at the global epicenter of biology research and education for generations.”
