The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced today, Monday, July 14, the start of its direct intervention—coordinated with the Ministry of Defense—to end ongoing clashes in Suwayda province. The fighting erupted between local factions and tribal groups in the al-Maqous neighborhood and has since spread to the province’s western countryside.
In a statement posted on Facebook, the ministry said units from its forces, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense, began intervening directly to end the violence, restore order, pursue those responsible, and refer them to the relevant judiciary. The goal is to prevent further tragedies, restore stability, and reinforce the rule of law.
The ministry attributed the “dangerous escalation” to the absence of official institutions, which has led to increasing chaos and a deteriorating security situation. Despite repeated local calls for de-escalation, efforts have failed, resulting in casualties and a growing threat to civil peace in the region.
The ministry urged all local parties to cooperate with internal security forces and exercise restraint.
It also emphasized the urgent need to deploy security forces across the province and initiate a comprehensive dialogue to address the root causes of tension, while safeguarding the dignity and rights of all societal components. The ongoing conflict, it warned, only deepens chaos and worsens the suffering of civilians.
Defense Ministry: Ensuring Safe Corridors for Civilians
In a separate statement on Facebook, the Ministry of Defense said that the institutional vacuum accompanying the outbreak of clashes had aggravated the situation, preventing military and security institutions from effectively intervening.
The ministry confirmed the deployment of specialized military units in affected areas, in coordination with the Interior Ministry, to secure safe corridors for civilians, contain the violence, and protect lives by the law.
It stressed that restoring security and stability in Suwayda is a shared responsibility between the state and its citizens. It voiced readiness to support any initiative aimed at promoting civil peace, national unity, and a dignified future for all Syrians.
Security personnel were instructed to adhere strictly to their assigned roles, especially in protecting civilians and preventing further violations.
In a related message on Telegram, Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba blamed the continuing unrest on what he called the “isolationist current,” accusing it of endangering Suwayda’s future by seeking to detach it from the Syrian state.
“There is no solution for Suwayda without the presence of state authority and the activation of its institutions,” al-Baba said, stressing the importance of formal military and security bodies in safeguarding civilians, ensuring livelihoods, and maintaining national unity.
He added, “The people of Suwayda are patriotic Syrians—then, now, and always—and the province will remain a proud pillar of the nation, not a haven for rogue militias and criminal gangs.”
Tensions escalated on the Damascus–Suwayda highway on Saturday, July 12, after a civilian was assaulted and robbed. The incident triggered a wave of clashes across Suwayda involving unidentified armed groups.
