I Tried 15 Different Kettle Chip Flavors and Found a New Favorite ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

True confession: I'm never not in the mood for chips, especially in the summer. The pool, the beach, the picnics—there are so many opportunities to enjoy a salty, crunchy snack in the sun. Luckily for me, there's a chip for every mood and occasion. I love a tortilla chip for dipping and a plain potato chip for adding a nice texture to my sandwiches, but when I really want to dial up the crunch, only a kettle chip will do. These extra crispy potato chips are rustic and hearty and really pack in the potato flavor. Although there are many brands of kettle chips, Kettle Brand is what I typically grab because they're super available, come in tons of flavors (with new ones coming out all the time) and are really delicious. The iconic brand has been around since the 1970s, when the company's founder started selling snacks out of his van. In the early 1980s, he started frying and selling kettle potato chips—and the rest is snacking history. These days, you can find Kettle Brand potato chips at most grocery stores. The biggest challenge? Choosing a flavor. And that's where I come in. To help you find out the best Kettle Brand chip flavor, I assembled my crew of chip lovers (my friends Maddie, Samantha and Cherie) and we crunched our way through 15 different bags of Kettle Brand chip, judging taste, texture and overall snackability. Here's our ranked list—from the one we liked the least to the one we'll be buying bags of all summer long.Related: I Tried 15 Different Brands of Potato Chips?? SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter. ??

How We Tasted These Kettle Chips

This was a classic blind taste test. I doled out handfuls of the chips to my hungry friends, and they rated each based on whether they liked them or not before I revealed the flavors, then we all went in for a second taste. We tasted each chip without knowing the ingredients or any other info on the package and everyone recorded their salty thoughts in a Google Form. I then sat down and combined that feedback with my own and averaged out our answers to create the final ranking.Related: 37 Types of Chips to Buy for Summer BBQs From Crisps and Cheetos to Puffs and Pringles

14. Krinkle Cut Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper Kettle Chips

"Love the krinkle cut! A solid salt and pepper chip," I wrote. Ultimately, my friends didn't agree with me fully. "Salt and pepper? It’s ok, but I prefer the Trader Joe’s ones over these," said Cherie, with Samantha noting, "Do not like this—the crinkle is too rough, the flavor is not my favorite." I guess that means more for me!

13. Apple Cider Vinegar Kettle Chips

This flavor idea was promising, but we thought the execution was harsh. Cherie was the only one to reach for this bag after our taste test to satisfy her midnight chip cravings. "Sour and crispy," said Samantha. "It reminds me of a powdery plantain chip," noted Maddie, while I thought the ACV flavor was just way too harsh for casual snacking.

12. Jalapeño Kettle Chips

We wanted bold jalapeno heat and got...a bit of confusion. Cherie said the seasoning was fine, but she couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be. (This is the advantage of a blind tasting.) Maddie called it too spicy with no clear flavor. I liked it and agreed with everyone on their flavor notes...but didn't like it enough to rescue it from the bottom of the ranking.Related: 44 Great Green Chile Recipes That Bring the Heat

11. Sea Salt Kettle Chips

You'd think a simple chip would be a safe bet, but this one kinda bored us. Maddie called this one right away (the chip expert she is), and Cherie said, "These taste like just plain potato. Pass! Too plain for me." Samantha said, "Very classic—not much seasoning, but the potato flavor is wonderful, very well-rounded. A really solid and classic chip for a sandwich."

10. Himalayan Salt Air-Fried Kettle Chips

This one split the room a little. I thought it tasted like a combination of Lay's classic chips and McDonald's French Fries (not bad). Maddie didn't think these were anything special. Cherie went all out on her comment card: "Pretty standard salted chip. Not great, but not bad. Just average. Good salt content, but for a kettle chip, it seems a little thin? I would think this was a Lay’s standard chip." So, a solid mid-pack chip that didn't offend, but didn’t excite us either. Perhaps the "kettle cooked, air finished" method missed the mark.Related: We Ranked 20 Different Lay's Flavors and the Winner is One You've Probably Never Tried

9. Krinkle Cut Truffle Oil & Sea Salt Kettle Chips

This flavor had potential, but didn’t quite land. I found the truffle a little underwhelming, which is OK because too much truffle flavor can be downright unpleasant. Samantha noted the texture was too thick for such a subtle flavor, which was an excellent point. Maddie compared the flavor to fake cheddar. Cherie was the most positive, saying she liked the crinkle and the truffle combination and said it reminded her of a Pringles chip or Cheez Whiz.

8. Texas BBQ Air-Fried Kettle Chips

There was a bit of a redemption arc for BBQ chips (and the air-fried version) on this one. Samantha said it had decent flavor and wasn’t too overpowering. Cherie didn't hold back, saying, "I would guess this is BBQ and maybe mustard? I’m so confused. It’s just a nondescript chip." I thought this one was better than Backyard BBQ (if I had to choose between the two), and Maddie liked that it wasn't too heavy-handed. "Sweetest chip so far, with a kick," she said.Related: 23 Must-Buy Aldi Snacks, According to a Superfan

7. Chili Crisp Kettle Chips

This limited edition flavor was a niche favorite. It would be great on a charcuterie board or if you wanted to bring an unexpected chip to a party. Samantha thought it had great potential, but said she wouldn't be able to eat a whole bag due to the spiciness. Maddie was less impressed and found it confusing, saying, "I like the spice, the minute I bit in, I thought it was a pizza flavored chip. Is this chili powder?" Cherie thought it needed to be spicier. It earned points for being different, but not everyone was ready for this one.

5. Sea Salt & Vinegar Kettle Chips

This chip had almost everyone swooning on the first bite. Maddie ranked it high and said it had the perfect level of tang. Samantha raved, "A classic. Very sour, but you know what you’re getting yourself into." I thought it was a solid take on a vinegar chip for a non-salt-and-vinegar lover, and Cherie liked the intensity, though she said the vinegar taste wasn't preferable to her beloved apple cider vinegar chips. She also thought the texture was too thin for a kettle-style chip.Related: The Genius Potato Chip Bag Trick We Wish We’d Known About Sooner

4. Sea Salt With a Hint of Pink Peppercorn Kettle Chips

We didn’t expect to love this one as much as we did, but it surprised all of us. Samantha thought it was subtle and delicious. Maddie liked the cracked pink peppercorn and how it gave the chip just enough of a bite to be interesting. Cherie said the aftertaste was great and said it was well-balanced, and I thought it was very different, but in a good way. This is the bag of chips I'd choose at the store. Overall, this one was a fancy-ish chip that still felt snackable and was a total crowd pleaser.

3. Chamoy Kettle Chips

This one came in hot—and tangy. I thought it was surprisingly good with a citrusy twist. Cherie guessed it had orange and lime and liked the uniqueness (and she was right about the flavors!). Samantha found it smoky and interesting. Maddie wasn’t obsessed but appreciated the boldness of this bag.

2. Special Sauce Kettle Chips

Sweet, tangy and totally snackable, this chip was one of the most unique in the bunch. Samantha called it "deliciousness" and said it tasted like a light BBQ. Cherie liked the smoky twist, and Maddie said it reminded her of fast food sauces in the best way. This one was a winner with a big personality and almost nabbed the top spot.
