ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We are under a Yellow Alert this afternoon and evening as a cold front sweeps through and causes thunderstorms with heavy downpours, possibly leading to flooding. The main area of concern is areas south and east of Rochester, but the city will likely see thunderstorms and flooding downpours as well. 2-3 inches of rain could fall within a very short timeframe. Some storms may also produce gusty winds. If you see a flooded road, turn around, don’t drown! Basement flooding is a risk in some spots as well. Download the First Alert Weather app to get updates from us sent instantly to your phone, and to see where the rain is on the First Alert Doppler Radar.
Before those storms hit, it will be a hot and humid morning. Our low temperature only got down to 73 degrees overnight, tying the daily record for warmest night set in 1987. Temperatures will quickly climb above 80 degrees by mid-morning, and dew points in the low 70s will make it feel ten degrees warmer. We should stay rain free until the early afternoon, however, so if you had any outdoor plans, the earlier the better. Stay cool and hydrated! Temperatures will peak in the upper 80s with heat index values near 100 before the storms arrive.
Storms are expected to initiate around 1-2pm and travel west to east. The danger with these storms is training; that’s when one area sees multiple successive heavy downpours which leads to flooding. The storms move along in a line one after the other, like a train. The storms are expected to be strongest by the time they reach Wayne, Ontario, and Yates County, where the greatest risk of flooding is. They should clear out west to east anytime between 6-9pm.
Tonight will be rain free but very mild and muggy with temperatures only getting down to the upper 60s. Less humid but some showers are again possible tomorrow to a much lesser degree, mainly around the Rt 104/Thruway corridor. Tuesday will be sunny, but hot with temperatures near 90 degrees. Hot again on Wednesday, with humidity rising and storms again possible. Unsettled weather continues to close out the workweek. Early call for this weekend is seasonably warm temperatures and mostly dry weather, but check back in for updates as there is still some uncertainty as per the possibility of rain.
