After a 2-1 defeat by France on matchday one, England responded by thumping the Netherlands last time out. They have now got the defence of their European Women’s Championship crown back on track.
Wales stand in their way this weekend. The bookies expect a one-sided encounter in St Gallen, but could we see a major shock instead?

England vs Wales women predictions
That was more like it.
Having lost 2-1 to France on matchday one of the European Women’s Championship, England knew they had to get a positive result from their clash with the Netherlands on Wednesday. A second defeat on the bounce would have sent the defending champions home after two games.
Even a draw would have left England vulnerable to a premature exit. It was not technically a case of ‘win or bust’, but it certainly felt that way.
England needed to stand up to be counted – and that is exactly what they did. Any sort of victory would have done, but a 4-0 demolition of the Netherlands was the perfect outcome for the Lionesses.
Not only did it move them above the Dutch on goal difference; it also restored confidence in the camp after that off-night against France.
England started on the front foot and did not let up. They asserted control from the get-go, pinning the Netherlands back and mounting attack after attack.
Sarina Wiegman’s women scored twice before the break and twice after it, making a statement of intent in Zurich.
“I’m really happy with the performance and the players were proper England,” Wiegman said afterwards. “I thought how we bounced back from our defeat against France was really good.”
The job is not done yet, though. England must beat Wales to guarantee their place in the quarter-finals, although a draw would do as long as the Netherlands fail to beat France.
Needless to say, Wiegman will want her side to take care of their own business rather than rely on a favourable result elsewhere.
Unfortunately for Wales, it is hard to envisage them taking anything off their neighbours here. The Dragons are making their European Championship debut this summer. Simply being here is an achievement, but from the moment Wales were drawn in the group of death, the knockout phase looked like it would be out of reach.
Having lost 3-0 to the Netherlands and 4-1 to France, Wales are virtually out already. They are massive underdogs against England on matchday three, when a draw would be celebrated like a win in Cardiff, Swansea and beyond.
Wales have lost three of their four prior meetings with England, but they have drawn with the Lionesses once. Rhian Wilkinson’s team will do everything they can to avoid defeat on Sunday.

England will be looking to book their place in the knockout phase of Euro 2025 by beating Wales.
England -3 handicap
Because they are not yet guaranteed a place in the quarters, England are likely to stick with a strong XI on Sunday.
Wiegman will resist the temptation to rotate ahead of the knockout phase. Regardless, it would do England good to build some momentum and rhythm with the same XI (or thereabouts).
The Lionesses turned on the style against the Netherlands and they will be keen to pick up from where they left off.
This will be a long and hard evening for Wales. They have been outclassed in their two games in Switzerland up to now and the same fate awaits them this weekend.
England should win this one by a handsome margin.
Choose England with a -3 handicap at 6/5 with Ladbrokes
England to win both halves
England won both halves comfortably against the Netherlands and they are more than capable of doing so again here.
The danger in terms of this wager is that England ease off in the second half once they have established a solid lead.
But even if Wiegman starts to make changes in the second half, the players that enter the fray will be determined to make an impression.
Wales should expect to be put under pressure right up until the final whistle, and England should create enough chances to win the second half as well as the first.
Back England to win both halves at 4/7 with Ladbrokes
Lauren James to score any time
Lauren James was back to her best on matchday two, scoring twice against the Netherlands to help England on their way.
Wiegman moved James from the No.10 position to right for the game against the Dutch, and she will probably continue in that role here.
When the Chelsea forward is on song, she is very difficult to stop. The 23-year-old’s talent is clear for all to see.
James had an injury-disrupted season in 2024/25, but she is fit and firing again now – and that is bad news for Wales.
Tip Lauren James to score any time at 7/10 with Ladbrokes
