ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Two local alcohol producers closed their doors Saturday, both citing a decrease in demand for alcoholic drinks as the reason.
Black Button Distilling closed their doors at 4 p.m. The closure comes during what the distillery described as a “distinct downturn in the alcohol market,” the company said in a statement online.
Heroes Brewing Company will also close it’s doors at 9 p.m. on Saturday, facing similar challenges.
Both held a special “last call” event to commemorate their companies.
Heroes Brewing Company co-founder Greg Fagen said the issue is nationwide. He cited high production costs, inflation, and increased consumer choices, including cannabis and non-alcoholic options, as factors affecting the market.
He said these challenges make it difficult for small businesses like his to survive.
“The reason craft is so popular is there’s variety. But variety is expensive, right?” Fagen said. “It costs more money to make a seven-barrel batch of a specialty beer than it does a 100-barrel batch of an American lager. So, you know, it’s beers getting expensive. Ingredients are getting expensive. Canning is getting expensive. You know, eventually maybe we’ll go around this curve and the cost will go back down.”
Despite the closure, Fagen expressed pride in his accomplishments since opening the brewery in 2016. He emphasized that today is a celebration of the company’s unique mission to donate part of every beer sold to local charities.
