New Windows 11 build introduces self-healing "quick machine recovery

Windows 11 marks a significant progression in operating system resilience and user experience. This innovative self-healing capability aims to streamline recovery processes following system failures or crashes, thereby minimizing downtime for users. By leveraging advanced diagnostic tools and automated recovery techniques, Windows 11 enhances its ability to restore functionality without extensive user intervention . Such advancements reflect a broader trend towards increasing operational efficiency in software design.

Windows PCs and servers and caused widespread service outages in many industries. Fixing some of those PCs required booting and fixing each one individually; QMR should make it possible to apply that kind of fix remotely even if a PC is so broken that it can't boot into Windows proper.

In fact, this preview gathers several features, many of which you might find useful, including “semantic search” in Settings: the ability to describe a problem and let Settings understand what you’re talking about in terms of natural language.

Quick machine recovery, however, sounds like a lifesaver in certain situations. It’s been around since March, but only in this recent build has it been specifically turned on for consumer PCs. If your PC glitches and throws a BSOD, it might boot up in what’s known as the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE), which gathers up several Windows 8-looking options to get things running, from uninstalling updates to playing with the Windows startup settings.

Microsoft is also mentioning the addition of a new "icon scaling" option for the taskbar, of which we have a whole article about since it's not really new—and it's personally one of my favorite additions to Windows 11 in the upcoming update. Voice access now allows users to add custom words to its dictionary, improving dictation accuracy for specialized or difficult-to-pronounce terminology. Furthermore, Narrator is gaining a "Screen Curtain" feature, which blacks out the display so that you can work with sensitive information in public spaces, relying solely on the audio-only screen reader for privacy.

The Snipping Tool gains a new shortcut, letting users launch the text extractor directly with Win + Shift + T. Settings also gets some refinements, including a clearer country or region display and more options for managing default browser behavior.

There is also a new option to make the default browser the handler for PDFs and pin it to the Start menu and taskbar.

Fixes in Build 27898 address issues in File Explorer, and Settings crashes. Some known problems remain, including display distortion in Remote Desktop on Arm64 PCs, and Settings crashes under Power & Battery options.
