DENVER (KDVR) — Aurora police are responding to rumors of juveniles planning a "takeover" at the Town Center this weekend, telling possible participants to expect repercussions if the event is held.

It's all part of the ongoing trend of juveniles going to public locations and fighting each other, among other chaotic actions. On June 28, the Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance closed early after rumors of such an event.

Due to a large police presence at City Park, the takeover did not take place as planned.

However, teens were injured during a takeover at The Shops At Northfields as approximately 300 juveniles converged on the area, entered businesses and engaged in fights and other disturbances. The news of these proposed takeovers is shared through social media and flyers, but has landed juveniles in the hospital.

One Aurora parent spoke to FOX31 days after the Northfield mall takeover while his daughter remained hospitalized with severe head injuries. She had been practicing for the takeover with friends when she suffered the injuries, according to her father.

“No parent thinks when their 14-year-old asks, can they go to the movies, can they go out to eat or can they go to Elitch Gardens with their friend, it’s going to turn out to something like this,” the parent said.

Now the Aurora Police Department says that another takeover is planned for the Town Center this weekend, which is located on East Alameda Avenue, and the agency says it is operating under a zero-tolerance approach.

"Aurora Police is taking this seriously," the department said on X. "You'll see an increased presence in and around the mall, including patrol officers and special units. Our mobile command post will also be on-site."

The agency clarified that if you're going to shop, spend time with family or other non-violent, expected activities at a mall, you are welcome.

"If you're coming to cause disruption - expect to be arrested," the agency said. "We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for everyone."

The Aurora Police Department said it would be monitoring other major shopping and retail locations across the city.
