NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah sees shades of Ben Roethlisberger and Daunte Culpepper when he turns on the tape for South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
Jeremiah, a former NFL scout who now does draft prep for NFL.com, has been providing “first look” scouting reports on the top names to know at quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. This week, he broke down Sellers’s game — what he likes, what he wants to see improved upon, etc. He wrote that Sellers impresses with his accuracy “at all 3 levels” and is an “outstanding open-field runner.”
While some might be quick to compare the 6-foot-3, 240-pound Sellers to former Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson, Jeremiah wrote that comp is no good.
“He’s far more advanced in his footwork and feel as a pocket passer,” Jeremiah wrote. “The closest comparison I came away with is Daunte Culpepper, a three-time Pro Bowler with the Minnesota Vikings during his 11 NFL seasons. Before he suffered injuries at the pro level, Culpepper was an outstanding athlete with the frame/build of an outside linebacker. He could function in the pure dropback game, but if pressured, he could buy time or take off and generate explosive plays. There wasn’t any panic in his game and he was very difficult to get on the ground. Sellers still has some development ahead of him, but it’s easy to see why NFL evaluators are already buzzing about his potential at the next level.”
Immediately following the 2025 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Matt Miller mocked Sellers to the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 16 in the first round of next year’s draft. (Surely Pittsburgh would sign up for Big Ben, Pt. 2, right?) In the weeks since, Sellers has been among the first quarterbacks projected to be taken in next year’s draft by multiple outlets.
His blend of athletic ability and arm talent makes him an attractive prospect
However, he’s entering just his third year in the program in 2025 and what will be just his second season as a starter. Sellers found a rhythm over the back half of the 2024 season and he was a key reason why South Carolina surged into the College Football Playoff periphery. But Jeremiah would like to see a step from Sellers in Year 2 when it comes to reading defenses.
“Sellers needs to work on moving more quickly through his progressions. He flashes the ability to get to his third option, but there are too many times where he gets stuck on his first read,” Jeremiah wrote for NFL.com. “When the first option doesn’t materialize, he often will turn to his legs to make things happen. I believe he will improve in this department as he piles up more game reps. There are also a few examples in the games I studied where he sinks at the top of his drop, which can impact his ball placement. He needs to narrow his base a little bit. Fortunately, that is an easy fix.”
More live reps should serve Sellers well.
And he’ll have a national audience to see his debut when South Carolina opens the 2025 season in Atlanta against Virginia Tech at the Aflac Kickoff Game on Sunday, Aug. 31.
