Andre Agassi had no time at all for any funny business during his first Wimbledon commentary box appearance for the BBC.
The US tennis legend is known as one of the game’s great characters, and didn’t disappoint on his debut with an SW19 microphone.
Agassi has been to Wimbledon countless times, but this was his first commentary box appearanceGettyAgassi was on the scene as he hopes to witness Taylor Fritz become the first American men’s Wimbledon finalist since 2009, but it quickly became clear he was far more interested in his opponent, Carlos Alcaraz.
The 55-year-old was fascinating as he discussed the technicalities of what makes Alcarez so brilliant, and he even showed an astonishing tennis memory.
Agassi recounted Alcarez’s almighty Roland Garros final comeback against Jannik Sinner from two sets and three match points down.
Going through each scoreline the Spaniard miraculously saved, co-commentators Andrew Castle and Tim Henman were stunned into an impressed silence.
The camera then panned to the royal box where Hollywood megastars Benedict Cumberbatch and Rami Malek were sitting, allowing Castle to lighten the mood with a huge but out-dated spoiler.
“Benedict Cumberbatch and the bloke who knocked off James Bond, Rami Malek, that’s no good. I’d be nervous sitting next to him.”
“Which Bond did he knock off?” Agassi replied, showing he was far more interested in tennis than film.
“Daniel Craig,” Castle replied. “That was it, over.”
The camera operator then panned into the Hollywood stars allowing Agassi to get a better look, to which Castle joked about his memory
“There’s Rami Malek there, do you remember that?” Castle asked.
Agassi wasn’t interested in the movie stars, just the tennis onesBBC Castle quickly switched back to tennisGettyAgassi then replied: “Don’t ask me stuff like that, I don’t know…” to an awkward chuckle in the box.
Agassi then broke the proceeding silence by saying: “They’re sitting in the rich people seats, a lot of shade.”
Despite the brief moment of awkwardness, Castle had learned his lesson, refusing to make any comment when the camera operator spent a decent chuck of time on Leonardo Di Caprio.
Instead he continued to compliment Agassi’s knowledge about Alcarez’s service game statistics, saying: “I wouldn’t correct you, it’s great to have your observations it really is.”
Yet eight-time Grand Slam winner Agassi then reminded viewers what makes him so loved, showing a dose of nervousness after summarising Alcarez’s 6-4 first set win.
“Is there a way to ask your viewers if I’m talking too much?” he asked.
Agassi was fawning over Alcaraz and new rival SinnerAFP“I’m serious. I’m way too new to this.”
The answer was comprehensively no, as Agassi continued providing superb insight, saying Alcarez has ‘the touch of [Roger] Federer and the defence of [Novak] Djokovic‘.
He then allowed himself a minor step away from technique, saying: “Can I say something not serious?
“Look at the size of his [Alcaraz’s] hands, he’s holding four tennis balls in one hand and juggling them and he’s only six feet tall.”
