ROCHESTER, N.Y. – There may be a cougar roaming around Rochester, according to members of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin visited the Beechwood neighborhood, where surveillance video captured what might be a cougar.

Brad Gibson, a professor at the University of Southern New Hampshire, measured a tree seen in the video to estimate the size of the animal.

“The cat seems to be, height wise, about twice as wide as this tree. The trees width measures 20 to 22 inches. So that would make it upward of 30 inches or so,” Gibson said.

Gibson, an expert in environmental studies and sustainability, said the animal’s body resembles that of a mountain lion.

“A mountain lion … will have a J-shaped tail — a long tubular tail with a J on it like a little hook,” Gibson said. “A hundred and fifty pounds is approximate average for a male. They are a big creature—sharp claws—large teeth—if they really wanted to they could really hurt someone,” Gibson said.

Gibson advised residents on what to do if they encounter the animal.

“Slowly walk away facing it. Don’t run, keep your eyes on it and slowly get into a safe spot,” he said.

Police were called to Rauber Street between Joseph and North Clinton avenues at about 12 a.m. Thursday for a possible sighting of the large cat.

Curtis Jones, a neighbor, claimed to have seen it.

“It’s like this big. Police came. They got this area cleared up and blocked off,” Thomas said. Gibson said it’s rare to see these animals in New York, but it is possible someone had it as a pet.

“Maybe somebody had it as a pet…maybe it got too large too rambunctious and they casually let it go,” Gibson said.
