A woman has been charged with animal cruelty after police in suburban Wauconda found 52 dogs living in unsanitary and overcrowded conditions at her home, authorities said.

The discovery was made at a residence in the 200 block of Sky Hill Road.

“Upon arrival at the residence, officers detected a strong odor of urine from outside the home and observed feces on the driveway. The homeowner, identified as Carol Reith, initially claimed to have only four dogs but later admitted to a recent litter of puppies,” police said in a statement. “When an officer was granted limited entry into the home, he was forced to retreat due to overwhelming odors of urine and bleach.”

After evaluating the home and animals, animal control officials determined the living conditions constituted animal cruelty. The residence was red-tagged and deemed uninhabitable by building and zoning authorities.

In total, 52 dogs were recovered from the home and sent to area shelters. One shelter, Reach Rescue in Mundelein, took in four of the terrier mixes and hopes to pick up more from Lake County Animal Control to foster.

“This by far was the worst one that I have been in as far as the filth,” said Amanda Dziekanski of Reach Rescue told NBC Chicago. “The entire floor was just feces and urine, and we were slipping and sliding all over the place.”

Dziekanski and Reach Rescue co-founder Patti Bianco responded to the home Wednesday night.

“These animals have no voice and who’s going to help them,” Bianco said. “And when we started our mission this is what it was. We’re going to help these animals find a home and get the respect and love and be part of a family.”

The pups will receive multiple medicated baths, vaccines and will be spayed and neutered before they begin the adoption process.

Reach Rescue named their four dogs Ramonda, Shuri, Zuri and Namora after characters in the movie “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” a play on words since the pups were from Wauconda, Illinois.

Anyone interested in providing a loving and lasting home for the dogs can contact Reach Rescue.
