NILES — For a third straight day, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers found themselves facing a multiple-run deficit against Williamsport.

While the Scrappers were able to rally from the early deficit, they fell behind a second time by an even wider margin.

Again, the Scrappers responded, this time in dramatic fashion.

The result was a 10-9 Scrappers win over Williamsport Thursday night at Eastwood Field.

Williamsport jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. After Scrappers starter Nick Falter retired the first two batters in quick fashion, Ryan Kennell reached on a fielding error. The miscue proved costly as Jack Lausch promptly belted a two-run homer over the right field wall.

The Scrappers quickly answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Max Hartman and Trey Fenderson each knocked in a run. Fenderson scored on a steal of third and a throwing error by Crosscutters catcher Hayden Christiansen.

However, this time Williamsport answered back, and with authority.

The Crosscutters scored three runs in both the third and fourth innings to build an 8-3 lead.

A pair of errors proved costly for the Scrappers in the Crosscutters’ three-run third. In the fourth, Williamsport strung together four consecutive two-out hits to extend their lead to five runs.

Patrick Roche, a recent Boston College graduate who was making his Scrappers debut, made an instant impact in the fifth. Roche pinch-hit with the bases loaded and doubled, knocking in three runs and cutting the Scrappers’ deficit to 8-6.

After Williamsport tacked on a run in the top of the eighth, the Scrappers went back to work in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases. Then, with two outs, Ben Watson singled home a pair of runs, making it a one-run game.

In the ninth, the Scrappers loaded the bases with one out thanks to an error, a walk and a hit batter. Ben Martin struck out, setting up the dramatic finish. Max Hartman hit a chopper to shortstop, but the ball rolled into left field after it was mishandled by shortstop Carlos Castillo, scoring the tying and winning runs.

With the victory, the Scrappers (16-12) remain one-half game ahead of both West Virginia and State College in the MLB Draft League standings. The Scrappers open a two-game series tonight at West Virginia to close out the first-half schedule. State College will play two home games against Williamsport.
