If you’re like most Americans—whether Republican, Democrat, or independent—you’re tired of the noise. You’re tired of politics that feel more like performance than problem-solving. You’re tired of watching both parties talk past each other while nothing gets done that truly helps you or your family.
I get it. And I’ll be honest: it’s not enough to just oppose Donald Trump or to say what we’re against. What we need now—urgently—is to be clear about what we’re for. We need leaders with real ideas who put people over politics and action over outrage.
What follows are 10 Big Steps that I think would give every American a real shot to prosper—not just scrape by. These ideas aren’t about left or right. Many but not all reflect legislation I’ve cosponsored or led on in Washington.
These steps would help us build a future where working people can afford a home, raise a family, and feel secure in their retirement. That’s not too much to ask. It used to be the American promise.
1. Clean Up Washington
Let’s start where we agree: the system is broken. Special interests and big money have too much influence. We need real ethics reform—starting with banning congressional stock trading and increasing transparency in campaign finance. Elected office should be public service, not a payday.
2. Make Energy and Water Affordable
Everyone deserves access to affordable electricity and clean water. That’s not radical—it’s common sense. Let’s invest in clean energy to lower utility bills, modernize our outdated grid, and expand desalination and water recycling to deal with droughts before they become crises.
3. Restore the American Dream of Homeownership
The cost of housing is crushing families. We need to build more homes that people can actually afford. We must also fix the home insurance market, which is breaking in places like California and Florida. Families should never be priced out of safety or stability.
4. Give People Better Healthcare Options
You shouldn’t go broke because you get sick. There’s a lot of talk in Washington about cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. We must protect and strengthen those programs instead. We should also allow younger, healthier people to buy into Medicare, and expand coverage to include dental, vision and hearing.
5. Make Healthy Food More Accessible
Millions of families struggle to afford healthy food. That’s unacceptable in the richest country on earth. Let’s support local farms that use sustainable practices, helping to bring down food costs while protecting our land and water for the next generation.
6. Protect Social Security
People have earned their Social Security benefits over a lifetime of work. We should protect and strengthen Social Security for today’s seniors and tomorrow’s workers alike. The Social Security 2100 Act would allow for the system to remain solvent and strong through the next several decades by ensuring those at the very top pay their fair share of payroll taxes.
7. Lead on AI—Responsibly
Artificial intelligence is changing our world fast. Let’s make sure it works for the average person—not against them. That means encouraging innovation, but also setting guardrails to protect jobs, privacy, and national security.
8. Make the VA World-Class
As a proud advocate for veterans, I’ve seen the difference quality VA care makes. Our veterans should have the best health care in the world—period. That means hiring more staff, fully modernizing facilities, and holding leadership accountable when service falls short.
9. End the Student Debt Trap
I believe Congress should set the interest rate on all federal student loans at zero. Let’s stop making higher education a lifelong burden.
10. Raise the Federal Minimum Wage
If you work full time in America, you shouldn’t live in poverty. Raising the federal minimum wage is long overdue. More money in workers’ pockets means stronger families and stronger communities.
