A new documentary is set to take fans behind-the-scenes of Tom Brady’s Birmingham City journey to date.
The Championship club raised eyebrows around the world when they announced in August 2023 that the NFL legend had purchased a minority stake in the team, reported to be 3.3 per cent.
Brady took a minority share of Birmingham City in August 2023GettyIn the two years since, he has watched from the stands as Blues suffered relegation to League One, before bouncing back to the second division with a record-breaking season.
A new trailer for the new five-part series, which is titled Built in Birmingham: Brady and the Blues, teases some of the mistakes that were made as the group suffered relegation and multiple managerial changes in the 2023-24 season.
“I believe all sports start at the top, and in the end, we screwed up,” Brady says, before the preview cuts to a clip of Sky Sports News announcing that manager Wayne Rooney had been sacked last January.
The England legend had taken over from John Eustace in October 2023, but lasted less than three months in the role.
Rooney was replaced by Tony Mowbray, who was later forced to step back from the role on medical leave, which led to Gary Rowett rejoining the club as interim manager for the last eight games of a tumultuous season.
Amid all the uncertainty, Blues were relegated to League One as they finished 22nd in the Championship.
Birmingham, who hadn’t played in the third tier of English football for nearly three decades, bounced back immediately under new manager Chris Davies.
They stormed to the League One title, and broke the Football League record for most points in a season, finishing with 111.
Birmingham also had a trip to Wembley, but came up short against Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy final, losing 2-0.
The team were undoubtedly boosted by investment in the playing squad over last summer, with Jay Stansfield arriving for a League One record transfer fee of £15million alongside the likes of Christoph Klarer and Tomoki Iwata.
Brady has suggested he will get his elbows ‘dirty’ after taking the role with BluesGetty He also admitted the team has made ‘mistakes’ during his time as a minority ownerPrime VideoIn the trailer for Built in Birmingham, Brady references those acquisitions, while also laying out their new mission statement.
“We’re trying to make Birmingham City a world-class team,” he says.
As well as looking at day-to-day operations of the club, the new Amazon show will also explore the ‘unique cultural heritage and loyal fan base’ who have stuck with the club despite a struggle for success or silverware.
The documentary will shine a spotlight on their community’s resurgence, with one fan noting in the trailer that ‘Birmingham City have been the pioneers in f****** up games of football from 1875’.
Brady himself, meanwhile, is involved with a number of other sports teams.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion purchased a minority stake in the WNBA‘s Las Vegas Aces in March 2023.
Brady has shares in a number of teams, including the Las Vegas Aces and RaidersGettyLed by Finals MVP A’ja Wilson, the Aces went on to win the WNBA Championship that year.
In October 2024, NFL owners unanimously approved Brady as a minority stakeholder in the Las Vegas Raiders.
He was cleared to purchase a 5 per cent stake in the franchise that he discussed with principal owner Mark Davis a year prior.
Brady faced issues with that deal as he is currently under a ten-year, $375m FOX Sports broadcast contract, and some other owners were concerned those roles could clash.
With a stake in multiple sports teams, and a mega TV contract, the former quarterback will no doubt be busy balancing all of his interests.
But in the trailer for the Blues documentary, Brady is heard insisting he is ready to ‘get his elbows dirty’ and also fired a shot at Wrexham AFC owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
“Wrexham, we’re coming for your a**,” he says.
Built in Birmingham: Brady and the Blues is set to air on Amazon Prime on August 1.
