College made Shedeur Sanders a millionaire, but his father Deion isn’t a huge fan of emerging athletes earning so much money.
Long before he stepped onto the practice field as a rookie with the Cleveland Browns, the 23-year-old quarterback was said to be worth $6.5million thanks to his NIL (name, image and likeness) deals.
Shedeur made millions of dollars playing for father Deion in collegeGettyAs he starred for the Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders signed partnerships with brands like Nike, Gatorade, Beats by Dre and Google, all of which dwarf his $4.6m NFL rookie contract.
But while this new NIL era ensures student athletes are paid, it also causes an imbalance when it comes to recruiting — and that’s something Deion is worried about.
The NFL Hall of Famer, who now coaches Colorado, believes the market needs a cap to help programs remain competitive.
While schools can share up to $20.5m directly to student athletes this year, the revenue share cap doesn’t apply to third-party NIL deals.
That means programs can work with outside partners to give athletes more opportunities, which gives the traditional powerhouses an advantage in recruiting and maintaining the top talent.
“I wish there was a cap,” Sanders said on Wednesday, as he appeared at Big 12 Media Days.
“You know, the top-of-the-line player makes this, and if you’re not that type of guy, you know you’re not going to make that.
“That’s what the NFL does.
“So, the problem is, you’ve got a guy that’s not that darn good, but he could go to another school and they can give him a half a million dollars.
“You can’t compete with that, it doesn’t make sense.”
Sanders called for a NIL cap during a BIG 12 media dayGettySanders then went on to suggest it’s hard to make an impact against the bigger teams in the College Football Playoffs (CFP).
The last three National Championship winners — Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State — were among the country’s top NIL spenders in 2024.
The Buckeyes were said to have spent $20.3m to field its title-winning roster last season, while new Miami QB Carson Beck is set to out-earn NFL star Bo Nix.
“All you have to do is look at the playoffs and see what those teams spent, and you’ll understand darn well why they’re in the playoffs,” Coach Prime added.
“It’s kind of hard to compete with somebody who’s giving 25-30 million dollars to a darn freshman class.”
“We’re not complaining, because all these coaches up here can coach their butts off and give them the right opportunity, with the right players here and there, you’ll be there.
Coach Prime fears some school will fail to compete amid the NIL boomGetty“But what’s going on right now don’t make sense.
“We want to say stuff, but we’re trying to be professional.
“But the team that pays them more, pays the most, is going to be there in the end.”
In 2024, with stars like Shedeur and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, Colorado finished with an impressive 9-4 record but missed out on the CFP.
Nevertheless, the Buffaloes accepted an invitation to play in the Alamo Bowl against BYU, where they were beaten 36-14.
Coach Prime will be hoping to make his team contenders again in 2025 — without Shedeur, Hunter and the NIL pull of a powerhouse.
The team will begin their season against Georgia Tech on August 29.
