Eugenio Chacarra and his caddie were joined by a Spanish football icon ahead of the Scottish Open.

The DP World Tour star has Hugo Gonzalez on his bag once again at the Renaissance Club this week.

Gonzalez is the son of Real Madrid’s all-time leading appearance maker Raul.

The former striker scored 323 goals in 741 appearances for the club and won three Champions Leagues during his career.

Whilst Gonzalez spent time playing academy football at a selection of his dad’s former clubs, golf proved to be his passion.

As well as being a 10-handicap himself, he is also Chacarra’s caddie and helped him prepare for the Scottish Open during a practice round on Wednesday.

Raul also joined the pair in North Berwick as he took a break from his role as the manager of Real Madrid’s reserve side.

Reflecting on the experience, Gonzalez said: “It’s been a crazy day.

“I wouldn’t have imagined this six or seven months ago when I started caddying that I would be here on this course caddying for Eugenio and playing with my dad. I’m never going to forget this.”

Explaining how he became Chacarra’s caddie, he added: “I played football all my life and I stopped playing when I was 17 or 18.

“I played for the academies of the teams my dad played for at Schalke and in Qatar and New York.

“But when I was 18 I wanted to just play for fun and I focused on my studies and I was finishing my last year at IE University in Madrid and Eugenio called me to jump on the bag and I said ‘let’s do it’. It’s been fun.

“Eugenio is my brother’s age and they’re friends. He would come to watch the Real Madrid games and I would go with them and watch the games and talk to him and I got into golf.

“I would travel with him to some events and he called me and said he wanted a friend on the bag so I jumped in.”

As for being the son of one of Spain’s greatest ever forwards, Gonzalez admitted: “You have good and bad things.

“There are people that criticise you for who you are but also there are much better things than bad things. It’s amazing to have a dad like that.”

Chacarra returned to the DP World Tour earlier this year after leaving LIV Golf following three seasons.

He has since picked up his first win as he triumphed at the Hero Indian Open in March with Gonzalez on his bag.

The victory earned him an impressive £306,000 in prize money as well as full European Tour status.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s Scottish Open presents his final chance to qualify for next week’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

Chacarra opened with a two-over-par 72 on Thursday, leaving himself eight shots off the lead.
