Denver Broncos Training Camp Preview: Brandon Jones, Talanoa Hufanga lead the safety room

Going into this season, Brandon Jones and Talanoa Hufanga are the two solidified starters for the Denver Broncos defense at the safety position. Hufanga’s addition this offseason uprooted P.J. Locke, who started for Denver last year, and Jones is settling in nicely heading into his second season with the team.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton has already outlined what he’d like to see from that unit behind Jones and Hufanga, and special teams impact will be the biggest determining factor.

Broncos position battles at safety

There will be a handful of players competing for touches during camp and preseason to determine who makes up the potential two to three spots behind Hufanga and Jones.

P.J. Locke is the one proven name who has been a key special teams player throughout his NFL career and has starting experience. Considering the injury history of Hufanga and Jones, having a player like Locke is valuable to Denver defensively in the event of an injury impacting a starter.

JL Skinner is the next name to keep an eye on as he prepares for his third season with the team. Skinner emerged as a special-teams ace last season for Denver and saw some time in the big nickel down the stretch.

He’ll be in line for more looks in the rotation or in different personnel packages defensively. There’s a strong chance that he and Locke compete for that third spot behind Hufanga and Jones.

Devon Key proved to be a capable name last season, stepping up in a handful of games defensively whenever there was an injury. Key also embraced his role as a core four special teams player and had a big impact on that side of the ball.

Key will likely compete against Delarrin Turner-Yell, veteran Sam Franklin Jr., and Keidron Smith for snaps on defense. With Darren Rizzi coming on as the Broncos’ new special teams coordinator, every player vying for a special teams role will have to impress him instead of last year’s carryover being a guarantee for them.

Defensively, this will be one of the more intriguing position battles to watch for.
