‘He’s just been aces’: Former Texas A&M QB Conner Weigman impressing Houston staff ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman wasn’t totally healthy when he arrived at Houston’s football facilities in January. Houston head coach Willie Fritz told reporters at Big 12 Media Day on Wednesday that Weigman wasn’t “full speed” until February.

“Had a little bit of an up and down career at Texas A&M,” Fritz said. “Some of that is changing what they were doing with coaches and those kinds of different things. He also got hurt.”

Weigman is looking to revitalize his career with the Cougars in the fall. In 3 years with the Aggies, he threw for 2,690 yards and 19 touchdowns. He had big moments in spots during the 2022 season, throwing for 338 yards and 4 scores against Ole Miss in October 2022. Then he opened the 2023 season on a heater, throwing for 909 yards and 8 touchdowns in his first 3 games before an injury knocked him out for the rest of the year.

In 2024, Weigman was expected to make A&M a contender in the SEC, but he opened the season with a 12-for-30 performance for 100 yards and 2 picks in a 23-13 home loss to Notre Dame. He had a short day in a win over McNeese a week later, then missed 3 straight games with an injury. In the middle of his third game back from injury, A&M benched Weigman for Marcel Reed and didn’t turn back. Weigman threw just 5 passes over the Aggies’ final 5 games before entering the transfer portal.

Reed will lead the Aggies in 2025. Weigman is expected to lead the Cougars, who are looking to rebound after a 4-8 season in Fritz’s first year at the helm.

“He’s been outstanding,” Fritz said on Wednesday. “He’s been everything that I hoped he’d be. Great young man, great leadership abilities. It’s really hard to coach a football team when your quarterback’s a prima donna. That happened to me 1 year many years ago. I made a decision that would never happen to me again, and he’s just been aces. We’re very fortunate to have him in our football program.

“Just a real old-fashioned type of quarterback.”
