This month, Kelly and Aaron discuss the situation in Mebane after the devastation of Tropical Depression Chantal. With the Graham-Mebane Water Treatment Plant still damaged and the water level down to a two-day supply, city officials have imposed a water restriction at the highest level: ordering non-essential businesses to close (except grocery stores, drug stores, and healthcare facilities) and telling residents to use water only for medical use, restroom use, and drinking. The city is distributing bottled water at the Arts & Community Center, the fire station on First Street, and Summit Church on Mebane Oaks Drive.
There have been conflicts in the midst of the crisis – locally-owned businesses have complained that fast-food chains are staying open despite the restrictions, and Mebane can only enforce those restrictions by imposing fines for violations – but there are also lots of examples of individuals, businesses, city staffers and organizations stepping up their efforts to help, and Kelly describes some of those positive stories as well.
