The new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Jay Shah, and the new CEO, Sanjog Gupta, will attend their first annual conference since taking office in Singapore between July 13 and 17. The LA28 Olympics cricket qualification will be one of the top agendas.
Cricket will return to the Olympics after a 128-year absence. However, with only six teams qualifying for the T20 event in men’s and women’s categories, ICC faces a difficult task in setting the qualification criteria.
As per a Cricbuzz report, the ICC will also discuss a minimum age requirement to play senior cricket, which is currently set at 15. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who smashed a 35-ball century in IPL 2025, would also fail to meet the minimum age criteria as he is only 14. Hence, the ICC is likely to amend the rule set in ICC’s 4.1 clause in Article A. At the ICC Annual Conference, the Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) will also discuss the prospects of a mobile cricket game.

Even as cricket makes a grand return to the Olympics after 128 years, the ICC has a lot of challenges in determining the qualification criteria. Unlike other Olympic sports, cricket does not follow the same pattern. For example, Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) compete as an entity in the Olympics. However, in cricket, Scotland and England compete separately. Similarly, the West Indies compete as an entity in cricket. However, in the Olympics, all Caribbean islands are separate affiliate nations.
While England and Scotland have agreed to form a joint team, GB Cricket, they will need ICC and the IOC’s nod. The Caribbean islands have also written to the ICC seeking clarity. They have urged the ICC to allow an inter-island qualifying round to determine which island should represent the West Indies at the Olympics.
Now, the ICC will have to take the call. Considering the packed cricket calendar, it is unlikely that there will be any separate LA28 Cricket Qualifying tournament. T20I rankings and the final position at the T20 World Cup could be the other two possible qualifying criteria.
At the moment, England, Australia, England, South Africa and New Zealand make up the Top 6 in Men’s ICC T20I ranking. Those six nations also make up the Top 6 in Women’s ICC T20I rankings.

The United States is an associate nation in the ICC and not a full member nation. Despite their heroics in the T20 World Cup 2024, USA are ranked 17th in Men’s and 25th in Women’s T20I rankings. As the host nation gets an automatic qualification berth at the Olympics, the ICC will have to take the call if the USA merits such a spot.
If the USA does earn an automatic qualification, it will leave the LA28 Olympics Cricket with just five top teams. In such a situation, countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka could miss out on an Olympic berth. It must be noted that India vs Pakistan cricket match creates a spectacle and earns millions in revenue.
