Samsung's Unpacked event and signifies the company's commitment to innovation in the rapidly evolving foldable market . The Galaxy Z Fold 7 features enhancements such as a thinner design and larger displays while maintaining premium camera capabilities. However, it faces scrutiny due to its smaller battery capacity compared to rivals like Honor and Oppo .

The main new additions to Samsung’s foldable phone range are the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which folds like a book, and the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which takes on the form of the classic clamshell-style flip phones. Samsung also announced a cheaper version of its latest flip phone, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 SE.

South Korean consumer electronics giant is refreshing its foldable phone lineup at a time when the company faces increased competition from Chinese rivals, such as Honor and Oppo. Last week, Honor — which spun off from Chinese tech giant Huawei in 2020 — launched the new ultra-thin Magic V5 folding phone, while Oppo introduced its own slim foldable device, the Find N5, earlier this year.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thinner and lighter than previous models, measuring 0.17 inches unfolded and less than 0.5 inches folded, and weighing under 0.5 pounds. Despite the reduced weight and thickness, screen sizes have increased to 6.5 inches (exterior) and 8 inches (interior). Battery capacity remains unchanged, but the device no longer supports a digital stylus. It features a 200MP main camera and a 10MP ultrawide camera extending along the frame. The Fold 7 starts at $1,999, with pre-orders available today and retail availability beginning July 25.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 also showcases significant improvements, including an enlarged cover screen and increased battery life . Retail pricing for these devices starts at $1,999 for the Fold 7 and $1,099.99 for the Flip 7. Additionally, the introduction of the Flip 7 FE at $899.99 aims to capture price-sensitive consumers amid fierce competition .

Huawei and Oppo. In 2024, Samsung held a substantial market share of approximately 32.9%, but with rivals innovating rapidly—such as Huawei’s tri-fold model—the pressure is mounting . As pre-orders commence ahead of general availability on July 25th, Samsung's ability to navigate this competitive landscape will be critical for sustaining its dominance in foldable technology.
