A jockey who allegedly jumped straight off his horse during a race has left the country as an investigation was launched.

Brazilian rider Lemos De Souza fell off his horse just as the race at Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia began.

De Souza was riding well-backed favourite Pacific Power when he dropped to the ground right out of the stalls.

Commentator Devon Pretorius was left shocked, saying: “He practically jumped off the horse.”

It led to some debate amongst fans over whether the fall was genuine or just theatrics from the jockey.

But race officials then opened an investigation into the incident.

After the investigation was launched, it was soon delayed after it was found that De Souza had left the country.

Stewards have been forced to wait to go on with the inquiry, with it originally planned for early this week.

According to The Straight, the Brazilian left Malaysia for Singapore.

Meanwhile, the Sun report that other claims say De Souza travelled away from the country for medical treatment.

It has meant that there is now no confirmed date for him to appear in front of the Selangor Turf Club’s integrity division.

Multiple angles of the incident have been shown on video replays.

After the horses shot out of the stalls to begin the race, De Souza, also known as ‘Lai Lai’, and Pacific Power were in stall No.1.

Only a few strides in, it appeared that the jockey became instantly unbalanced and then fell off to the side.

Commentator Pretorius described the incident as he looked back at the footage, explaining: “A look at the replay here… Pacific Power jumps and Lai Lai – I’m not too sure if the saddle slipped.

“Then he pretty much knew his fate about ten metres out of the starting stalls and then practically jumped off the horse as he knew he wasn’t going to get his foot back in his irons on his right side.”

De Souza could face a lengthy ban if found guilty of any wrongdoing following the investigation.

Jockey Alvinio Roy was banned for five years after unusually tumbling off his horse in Mauritius in 2024.

And Irishman Philip Byrnes is still under investigation after being unseated on Redwood Queen in May.

Byrnes was accused of ‘purposely’ falling off his horse at one of the final fences by horse racing pundit Meg Nicholls and others.

However, in this case, with De Souza not in the country, any proceedings to decide if he faces any punishment still have no date.
