ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Hundreds of kids had smiles on their faces at James Cook’s football camp on Wednesday at Bishop Kearney. The NFL star running back for the Buffalo Bills spent time with young fans, teaching them about the game.
“Cool, I always had a dream of meeting an NFL player,” said Zai, a camper.
“Just playing with him, talking to him,” said another camper, Briella.
“It’s pretty cool because you usually see him in full pads so seeing him without the pads and what they’re really like is pretty nice,” said Campbell, another camper.
The kids learned various skills, from offense to defense, while also picking up tips to improve their game.
“I learned how to back peddle better and how the receivers catch it,” said camper, Peyton.
“It’s fun, you get to do some 1 on 1s, 2 on 2s, you can probably see a couple there… it’s probably one of the best camps I’ve been to,” said Campbell.
One camper, Colton, said he learned “different ways to catch the ball as a wide receiver.”
While the camp was a highlight for the kids, James Cook’s future with the Bills remains uncertain. He is in the final year of his contract, and negotiations for an extension have stalled. Bills legend Thurman Thomas, who was in attendance at the Red Wings game on Tuesday, offered his perspective on Cook’s situation.
“I think if this is going to be his last year, then let it be his last year. Make sure you play him, because I think over the past couple of years he’s been the second best player on the football team,” said Thomas.
Thomas added, “I want James to get his money but I just don’t want it to end in a bad way.”
As the young campers enjoyed learning from James Cook, the running back might find inspiration from one of the best in Bills history. The focus will soon shift to training camp at St. John Fisher in the Rochester area, where Cook will be a name to watch amid his contract discussions.
