As part of its effort to ensure students have a healthy start to the school year, Adventist Health Ukiah Valley is holding their annual Free Sports Physicals and Back-to-School Fair.
Ukiah Valley’s clinic providers, including family medicine residents, will be volunteering their time to provide this much-needed service to students and their families on Saturday, July 19, from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic located at 260 Hospital Drive, Suite 103 in Ukiah.
The Back-to- School Fair will be happening at the same time, offering free backpacks and school supplies to students and their families.
A sports physical is required by California schools before a child can participate in any school sports and is aimed at finding problems that might pose a health hazard – such as hernias, untreated asthma, an undiagnosed heart condition or concussion injury.
For local sports medicine physician Brian Gould, DO, these exams are also an opportunity to make sure students are generally healthy and don’t have underlying conditions that will prevent them from participating in sports.
“It’s important especially for those who are first-time athletes. During these exams, we ask screening questions to help us identify potential health issues that may predispose athletes to injuries and/or catastrophic medical events during physical activity.
“The goal of these exams is to ensure the athlete can participate safely and facilitate any additional workup necessary to be safe on the playing field. Occasionally we discover conditions that would have never been diagnosed otherwise. During previous events, we’ve been able to diagnose heart conditions and refer them for further treatment,” Dr. Gould explains.
While sports physicals satisfy school requirements, parents are encouraged to schedule annual well-child exams for more comprehensive health screenings with their primary care provider.
Parental consent is required for youth physicals; forms will be available on-site. Sports physicals will be offered from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., but students and their families are advised to come during the suggested times for specific age groups:
7- 9 a.m.: 9th – College 9-10 a.m.: 6th – 8th grade 10-11 a.m.: 3rd – 5th grade 11a.m.- noon; Pre-K- 2nd gradeAdditionally, to support students and their families with the cost of preparing for the school year, Adventist Health Ukiah Valley will also hold their Back-to-School Fair at the same time, in partnership with community organizations, offering free backpacks and school supplies, along with community resources, such as diabetes screenings, vaccinations for those entering 7th grade, and valuable information for the entire family.
