The old Ukiah House, once the most popular hostelry in Mendocino county, is being demolished this week. When the property was purchased by I. Rudee several years ago the old hotel building was moved to Main street to make way for the building now occupied by the C. Hoffman Co.
The building was of wooden construction and antiquated and has only been a fire menace for years and when Lew Hofman of the C. Hofman company leased the property a few days ago one of the conditions was that the old building should be removed.
The old Ukiah house was one of the landmarks of the town and was for many years conducted by the late Anna Hagans. In the early days it was the scene of many interesting events and a number of stories are told of the attempts of the famous bad men to disturb its quietude.
The old building was on fire a number of times and several buildings in the immediate neighborhood were burned but it seemed to bear a charmed existence against the fire demon. Manager Hofman was afraid however that its luck might change some day and that it would burn down.
