The maker of popular Ritz crackers has announced a major recall of certain packages and cartons of sandwich crackers sold at retailers nationwide after they were incorrectly labeled as containing cheese instead of peanut butter, which could lead to “life-threatening allergic reactions” for some.
The voluntary recall was announced by Ritz parent company, Mondelēz Global LLC, Tuesday. According to a release from the Food and Drug Administration, the impacted products “include individually wrapped packs that may be incorrectly labeled as Cheese variety even though the product may be a Peanut Butter variety.”
The announcement went on to say that those with an allergy or sensitivity to peanuts who consume the product “risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions.”
This recall exclusively applies to 8-pack, 20-pack, and 40-pack Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwich cartons, the FDA said, and 20-pack Ritz Filled Cracker Sandwich Variety Pack cartons. No other Ritz products were part of the recall, and cartons containing only Ritz Cheese Cracker Sandwiches were also not impacted.
