The plot thickens in the rivalry between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark.
Two of the WNBA‘s hottest commodities, when you mention one of them, you almost certainly mention the other.
Clark and Reese are two of the WNBA’s hottest starsGettyIntertwined as two of the biggest stars coming out of the 2023 draft class, many are quick to compare their respective games, despite Clark being a deep-range shooting threat guard, and Reese being a double-double merchant in the frontcourt.
Last season the race for the Rookie of the Year award seemingly went down to the wire, though when the voting results were published, Clark was one vote away from being unanimously awarded.
Both have been named back-to-back All-Stars through their first two years in the league, albeit Clark was named as a starter and one of two captains after receiving the most fan votes in WNBA history, while Reese was named as a reserve.
Of late, though, with Clark having been sidelined for the last five games with injury, Reese has firmly been in the center of the spotlight.
Having broken WNBA record after WNBA record, Reese now finds herself on a six-game streak of recording 15-plus rebounds, which has seen her market the ‘Mebounds’ tag .
In those last six outings the Chicago Sky star has averaged 17.8 points, 17.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists, yet the Sky have won just two of those games.
Nonetheless, with the tear that she is on, there has been no better time to fire a double blow to her former college rival.
On Wednesday, the ‘Bayou Barbie’ finally unveiled her first signature shoe with Reebok called the ‘Angel Reese 1.’
In a colorway that has been titled ‘Diamond Dust’, the Baltimore, Maryland native pays homage to her “culture-driving energy and style while being grounded in innovative performance basketball design.”
With this release – date to be confirmed – the 23-year-old becomes just the second WNBA player to have a signature shoe with Reebok after Rebecca Lobo in 1997.
Reebok have unveiled the Angel Reese 1X: @Reebok Clark can be seen rocking her Kobe 5 Protro PEsGettyIt was only in June when Nike announced the release of an Indiana Fever-inspired colorway of the Nike Kobe 5 Protro PE for Clark.
A limited run of just 13,000 pairs on SNKRS, they reportedly sold out in under a minute.
Though Clark is also rumored to have a signature sneaker release in the works written somewhere in her multi-year contract worth $20-plus million, Nike have somewhat dropped the ball by having not released it yet.
But in a double whammy, Reese also debuted her signature sneaker on the cover of NBA 2K26, with 2K announcing – also on Wednesday -the Sky star as the cover athlete for the WNBA Edition of their flagship video game.
Reese took to social media platform X to respond to the big reveal.
She said: “Of course we do everything BIG. Why not debut my signature shoe on the cover of NBA2K ?!?!”
Reese was named as the NBA 2K26 cover athlete for their WNBA EditionX: @2K Reese joins Standard Edition star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Superstar Edition cover athlete Carmelo Anthony on the Leave No Doubt Edition of NBA 2K26X: @2KReese becomes the latest WNBA cover star, taking over from reigning league MVP A’ja Wilson.
On being named cover star, Reese said: “Being on the cover of NBA 2K26 and debuting my first-ever signature shoe with Reebok on that cover, the Angel Reese 1, is more than a milestone—it’s a statement.
“It’s about representation and showing young girls they can be confident, bold, and take up space unapologetically.
“To be cemented in NBA 2K history is a special honour that reflects not only my journey, but also all the veteran WNBA players who have paved the way before me and the growing impact of the league as a whole.
“I’m proud to be part of a game that continues to elevate women’s basketball and can’t wait for fans to see how NBA 2K26 brings our game to life like never before.”
Whilst many were quick to hand Reese her – deserved – plaudits, others voiced their confusion and frustration over 2K’s choice, believing Clark should have been the cover athlete instead.
American media personality Jon Root took to X voice his opinion on Reese being named the cover athlete and said: “I just can’t understand why they wouldn’t put the most impactful, transcendent and popular women’s basketball player of all time, Caitlin Clark on the cover… It’s baffling how bad this marketing move is.”
“Imagine not having Caitlin Clark as the cover athlete despite her being the face of the WNBA,” another fan said.
Another fan echoed a similar sentiment: “Caitlin Clark should have been on the cover of the WNBA edition, not Angel Reese. She is not the face of the WNBA. Caitlin Clark is the only reason why I watch the WNBA.”
But in the midst of Clark fans taking to the keyboard to slander Reese and her achievements, there was a plethora of support aimed her way.
“AR legit breaking records each year. Love the hustle. Hyped to see the evolution,” one fan said.
Another said: “Angel Reese is just better at life than most people, because what do you mean you just debuted your signature shoe on the cover of 2K…
“Need I remind y’all, she announced that she declared for the draft in VOGUE! She’s insane.”
Having already recorded 14 double-doubles through 18 games so far in the 2025 season, Reese could yet surpass the record for most in a season, chasing 28 that was set by six-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas in 2023.
What an ‘insane’ feat that would be.
