TEMPE — Improving the pass rush and run defense have been among the Arizona Cardinals’ biggest focuses this offseason ahead of a critical Year 3 for the current regime.

But for all the attention up front, improving in the takeaway department hasn’t been lost on the guys behind them.

“We gotta get the ball.”

“We have more than enough guys to do it, and I think all of us are really capable,” Williams said Tuesday. “I feel like we’re all kind of on the same page of, we did good last year, but we gotta get the ball. That’s one of our emphases is to get the ball.”

Seeing a healthy uptick in takeaways could do wonders for a defense coming off 17 in 2024 (20th in the NFL).

The Cardinals finished in the red with a minus-3 turnover differential (18th in the league).

Getting back into the green is key if Arizona wants to get back into the playoff picture.

Of the 15 teams that ended the season in plus territory, 13 earned a postseason bid. The two that missed the boat despite being +8 and +3 in turnover differential were the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals, respectively.

Those are the type of odds you want a piece of if you’re the Cardinals.

Williams isn’t doubting Arizona’s potential.

“It’s a little bit of everything,” Williams said. “I feel like the front obviously helps having more guys brought in. And then also us having another year in the scheme, and then also us just looking at our own abilities and just realizing that we can do a lot more. It’ll be good.”

Who might be the Arizona Cardinals’ missing turnovers link?

The additions of Josh Sweat, Calais Campbell, Dalvin Tomlinson and Walter Nolen III headline some of Arizona’s biggest moves this offseason.

They’re expected to lead the charge in disrupting the quarterback and stopping the run, but it’s rookie cornerback Will Johnson who could very well be the key when it comes Arizona climbing up the takeaway ladder in the passing game.

When healthy, Johnson was a big play waiting to happen for Michigan. Across his final two college seasons, the cornerback snagged six interceptions. He returned three of those for touchdowns.

That included taking back two for scores in just six games as a junior in 2024. He may have missed a majority of the season due to toe and shoulder issues, but Johnson still paced the NCAA in interceptions returned for scores.

“I think the first thing that stands out is obviously just the football IQ part, and I feel like that was the thing we saw even with him at Michigan was just being able to be really instinctive and make plays on the ball,” Williams said of Johnson.

“Then you take that and add his size and all those things and just, again, a guy who’s willing to learn. I think that’s a really good mix to have to add to the room. … I feel good about him and everybody else in the room.”
