DENVER (KDVR) — Early July wind gusts have uprooted trees, taken down power lines and wreaked houses in the Denver metro area, but this damaging wind is known as more than just a strong breeze.
The National Weather Service said these strong winds are known as "dry microbursts."
Dry microbursts occur when rain falls from a cloud and lands into a dry layer of air, causing it to evaporate. With evaporation, NWS said the air cools, becomes dense and moves toward the ground faster and faster, causing the air to hit the ground and move outward to create a wind gust with little to no rain.

After the wind moved in around 2 p.m., a tree toppled onto a property, but no one was injured.

There are heat advisories in the area, and those with respiratory issues should stay inside. The Pinpoint Weather team said it will be brisk again Thursday afternoon.
