ROMULUS, N.Y. – A New York State prison guard is suing the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, claiming she experienced racism and retaliation in the workplace.
Angela Joyce Wells, who has worked for DOCCS for seven years and is currently employed at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus, Seneca County.
She alleges that, after reporting a racist incident involving a co-worker at a correctional facility, she was labeled a “snitch,” given undesirable assignments, and threatened by co-workers who pressured her to fight them. Wells believes the issue is not limited to a few problematic prison guards but is a systemic problem within the department.
“They don’t see me as an equal or people of color as an equal. When we have the same uniform on. They treat us like they treat the inmates or worse than they treat the inmates,” Wells said.
New York’s Division of Human Rights has found probable cause in Wells’ case, paving the way for a formal hearing in 2026. A spokesperson for DOCCS stated that the department does not comment on pending litigation.
