Two athletes with the Rodarte Community Center Boxing Club competed at the USA Boxing National Junior Olympics for the first time.
Coaches Jacob Sanchez and Enrique Garcia accompanied 15-year-old John Poland and 8-year-old Viviana Carrillo to the Junior Olympics from June 14-21 in Las Vegas, according to a city of Greeley news release.
Poland, who attends Northridge High School, has been training at Rodarte for several years. He lost in the second round of the Junior Olympics against the No. 1-ranked boxer in his weight class of 165 pounds, the release said.
After boxing at the Rodarte for a few years, Viviana Carrillo, a Maplewood Elementary School student, competed in the 65-pound weight class at the Junior Olympics, the release said. Carrillo lost in the first round of the competition.
Both boxers are ranked nationally for USA Boxing following the national tournament, according to the release.
