Leicester set sights on Ruud van Nistelrooy replacement – and it’s not Chris Wilder or Gary O’Neil ...Middle East

Former QPR manager Marti Cifuentes is the frontrunner to become Leicester’s new boss, talkSPORT understands.

Chris Wilder and Gary O’Neil were both in the running for the vacant managerial position to become Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s replacement.

Leicester director of football John Rudkin also met with Sean Dyche.

And Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl was another candidate for the east Midlands outfit.

But it appears that Leicester have opted to bring in Cifuentes, who impressed during his two years at Loftus Road while working on a shoestring budget.

Under his tutelage, QPR finished 18th and 15th – with the former Hammarby manager winning 27 and losing 31 of his 82 matches.

Cifuentes stepped down as QPR boss in June.

He had been placed on gardening leave following the Hoops’ final game of the season against Burnley in April, which they lost 5-0.

The 43-year-old is now set for an instant return to the dugout to remain in the Championship.

talkSPORT understands that Cifuentes stands to earn less at the King Power Stadium than what he was on at QPR.

Should it be Cifuentes that is appointed, he will be tasked with guiding Leicester to an immediate return to the Premier League.

The Foxes parted company with Van Nistelrooy last month following their relegation back to England’s second-tier.

Just six league wins saw Leicester finish 18th last term – 13 points from top-flight survival.

They are set to begin their Championship return at home to Wednesday on August 10.

And they will be hoping for a positive pre-season in their quest to win a second Championship title in three years.

Coach Andy King took charge of the side at their training ground for their victory over League One Peterborough last weekend.

A brace from Louis Page and Silko Thomas’ late strike secured a 3-1 victory for the 2021 FA Cup winners.

Leicester next face Belgian side Oud-Heverlee Leuven on Saturday.
